We know the importance of vaccines in protecting our health, but have we considered the impact of their empty vial disposal?Improperly disposed vaccine vials can have serious environmental consequences. In this article, we will explore the challenges associated with empty vaccine vial disposal, the environmental impact of improper disposal, and best practices for safe disposal.Additionally, we will delve into innovative vial recycling solutions and collaborative efforts aimed at achieving sustainable disposal practices.

A vial (also known as a phial or flacon) is a small glass or plastic vessel or bottle, often used to store medication in the form of liquids, powders, or capsules. They can also be used as scientific sample vessels; for instance, in autosampler devices in analytical chromatography. Vial-like glass containers date back to classical antiquity; modern vials are often made of plastics such as polypropylene. There are different types of vials such as a single dose vial and multi-dose vials often used for medications. The single dose vial is only used once whereas a multi-dose vial can be used more than once. The CDC sets specific guidelines on multi-dose vials.

The glass vials into which vaccines and most other biologic drugs are packaged have changed very little in the past 100 years. Traditional borosilicate glass vials have several safety concerns associated with them, from the possibility of breakages to their potential to delaminate. To find out how these issues affect pharma and their possible impact on COVID-19 vaccine distribution, European Pharmaceutical Review’s Hannah Balfour spoke with Lawrence Ganti, Chief Business Officer of SiO2, an innovative materials science company who has developed hybrid vials for biologics.

Multi-dose vials are more likely to become contaminated compared to single-dose vials, and therefore require important injection safety actions.“Multi-dose vials are more likely to get dirty because you’re putting a needle into that bottle many times to pull out each dose for each separate vaccine,” said Dr. Abigail Carlson, an infectious diseases physician with the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), as part of CDC Project Firstline’s Inside Infection Control video series.If the vial gets dirty, contaminated, or past the beyond-use date, it will have to be thrown away because it can harm patients.
